Studio monitor speakers for accurate monitoring

Studio monitors are designed for critical listening, helping you hear the balance and detail of a recording without the sound being heavily shaped for conventional hi-fi listening. They are commonly used with audio interfaces, mixers and computers in recording and music production environments.

The collection includes both individual monitors and stereo pairs, with active and passive designs available. Active monitors have amplification built into the speaker, while passive models such as the Mission LX-2 MKII and LX-3 MKII require a separate amplifier.

Choosing the right monitor size

Monitor size has a direct effect on the speaker's frequency response and output. Compact models are useful where desk space is limited, while larger monitors can provide greater low-frequency extension and higher output when the room and listening position allow for it.

The Yamaha HS range demonstrates this progression. The HS5 uses a 5in woofer and has a published frequency response of 54Hz to 30kHz, while the HS7 uses a 6.5in woofer and extends to 43Hz. The HS8 uses an 8in woofer and reaches down to 38Hz. All three are two-way, bi-amplified monitors with XLR and TRS inputs, alongside room control and high-frequency trim controls.

For smaller workspaces, the Yamaha HS3 and HS4 provide more compact alternatives, using 3.5in and 4.5in low-frequency drivers respectively. Both are powered two-way monitors with XLR/TRS, RCA and stereo mini inputs.

Monitors for different studio setups

There is no single monitor specification that suits every room. A compact pair can be appropriate for a desktop workstation, while a larger monitor may be better suited to a dedicated production or recording room. Room size, listening distance and the amount of low-frequency information required should all be considered when choosing a model.

The PreSonus Eris range includes compact monitors alongside larger Studio models. The Eris Studio 5, for example, uses a 5.25in woven-composite low-frequency driver with a 1in silk-dome tweeter and 80W of Class AB amplification. Its acoustic controls allow the response to be adjusted to the room.

The collection also includes monitors from M-Audio, JBL and Mackie, providing alternatives across different sizes and price points. This makes it possible to equip an individual music technology workstation or specify monitors for a larger studio installation without being restricted to one manufacturer.

Studio subwoofers

A subwoofer can be added when a monitoring system needs greater low-frequency extension. The collection includes dedicated models such as the PreSonus Eris Sub 8BT, Alto Professional TS Sub, Bose F1 Subwoofer and PreSonus CDL Sub8.

Subwoofers need to be matched to the main speakers and the room rather than selected independently. The Yamaha HS8S, for example, is designed as a companion to studio monitors and uses an 8in driver with a 150W amplifier. It provides controls for level, phase and crossover, allowing its output to be integrated with the main monitoring system.
