The surdo provides the deep, resonant foundation of a samba rhythm section, making it an important instrument for samba ensembles and Brazilian percussion activities. The collection includes options for different players and group sizes, from the lightweight Izzo Junior surdo, designed with younger players in mind, through to larger full-size drums.

The Izzo surdo 18in x 40cm and Izzo surdo 20in x 40cm offer lightweight aluminium shells, durable drum heads and six tuners, with the larger 20in model providing another option for players looking for a bigger drum. Both are made in Brazil and are described as suitable for classroom use and samba bands.

For groups needing several drums, the Izzo Castle surdos set of 3 is available in 12in, 14in and 16in sizes, while the set of 4 adds an 18in drum. These Castle surdos have a single drumhead and are designed to nest inside one another, making the sets easier to store and transport when space is limited.

There is also the Percussion Plus Street samba set of 3 nesting drums, combining a 10in repinique with 14in and 16in surdos. The set is made for samba playing and is designed to nest for storage, making it a practical option for introducing samba music in schools.

For a different construction, the Izzo Bahia aluminium surdo 18in x 45cm features a lightweight aluminium shell, white P2 190-micron drumhead, eight tension points and chrome hardware. It is designed in the Bahia style and is suitable for samba bands, batucada groups and school use.
