About steel pans

Steel pans originated from Trinidad and Tobago in the 1930s and belong to the idiophone section of the orchestra. Steel pans are usually tuned chromatically, and the larger the oval within the pan (representing a note) the lower the pitch that will be played. It is played using sticks topped with rubber. Those who play steel pans are referred to as pannists, or panists/panmen, and these musicians tend to memorize everything they perform.
