As of April 2016 Yamaha have replaced the YFL211 student flute! This must have been a pretty big decision, the YFL211 has been the student flute since the mid 90's. It has been universally accepted by teachers, students, music services and must have sold in huge numbers! So, why tamper with a winning formula?
Yamaha are an extremely forward thinking company - it is thought that this one instrument model has been one of the most thought about, researched and planned product development projects in the history of Yamaha student instruments. Changing the venerable YFL211 was not a decision to be taken lightly. However, change it they have and it certainly appears as though they have made the best student flute on the market even better!
The NEW YFL212U model has a number of new features:
Straight AND Curved Head Joints
The additional curved headjoint supplied with this model allows beginners to start learning from a younger age because it creates a 'U bend' in the head of the flute which brings the keys closer to the body. This prevents smaller players from stretching too far which can often be detrimental to their technique and posture. As soon as they are ready for a full length flute, the curved head can simply be replaced by a standard straight joint (also supplied).
'French' Pointed Key Arms
Yamaha have taken this design cue from their more expensive models, this is something only a large manufacture can do of course, but the resulting effect is a much more sturdy key, it effects the way the pads are depressed and released and makes pad wear much more even . All good stuff, the instrument feels more solid and will probably need less maintenance.
New Pad Cup Style
After much research Yamaha have decided to change the actual shape of the indentations on top of the keys- this is more ergonomic, it results in a much more comfortable playing experience.
New Optimised Pads
Yamaha have taken the flute key pads, change the material, changed the design and come up with a much better shaped pad using a more hard wearing material which results in a better seal over the tone whole - this is something that will improve the longevity of the instrument enormously.
Hard Carrying Case
Any student instrument needs protection and the new case has a carry handle, (which the old one didn't) and is more solid with a better overall design. It keeps your flute snug and safe
Essentially this model is a pretty big improvement over an instrument which was already the best selling student flute model of all time. We would say that Yamaha are onto yet another winner!
