The Yamaha YSL-254CF is a Bb tenor trombone designed with developing players in mind. The YSL-254CF retains the playing characteristics of a conventional trombone while introducing a modern carbon fibre slide design. Lightweight and durable - carbon fibre slide

The outer slide of the YSL-254CF is made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic, a lightweight and highly rigid material with excellent corrosion resistance. The reduced weight of the slide makes it easier for younger players to maintain a comfortable playing position and can help reduce strain during longer playing sessions.

Durability is another important benefit for developing players. Yamaha has tested the carbon fibre slide against conventional brass pipe to assess both impact resistance and strength. In Yamaha's impact testing, a brass pipe developed a dent that prevented the slide from moving, while the carbon fibre pipe showed only surface marks with no change to its inner diameter or slide action. A separate strength test found the carbon fibre pipe to be approximately 15% stronger than the brass pipe tested.

The material's resistance to corrosion also makes the slide well suited to players who are still learning the importance of regular instrument care.

Sound with confidence

Although carbon fibre is sometimes associated with lightweight plastic instruments, the YSL-254CF uses carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), which provides the rigidity and dimensional accuracy required for a trombone slide.

This helps maintain smooth airflow and a quick response while producing the natural tone expected from a conventional trombone. Players can therefore benefit from the lighter and more durable slide without having to compromise on the playing characteristics of the instrument.

Carbon fibre slide configuration

The carbon fibre construction is used specifically for the straight sections of the outer slide. The slide crook is made from brass, while the inner slide is constructed from nickel silver. This combination allows Yamaha to reduce the weight of the moving outer slide while retaining traditional materials in key areas of the instrument. The result is a slide that is light and robust while maintaining the feel and response expected from a tenor trombone.

Dedicated to quality

Yamaha has carried out internal testing to verify the strength and durability of the YSL-254CF's carbon fibre slide. Impact testing demonstrated its ability to withstand conditions that could leave a brass slide dented and unusable, while strength testing showed the carbon fibre pipe to be approximately 15% stronger than the brass pipe tested.

The YSL-254CF also features an 8-inch yellow brass bell and medium 12.7mm bore, providing a familiar configuration for developing trombone players. It is supplied as a complete outfit with an SL-48S mouthpiece and protective case.
