The product of many years of constant development
The first-generation Yamaha CF concert grand was launched in 1967 to great acclaim, quickly garnering a reputation for quality and a tone which can cut through the sound of an accompanying orchestra. The CF was selected as the official piano at several international piano competitions, also becoming the instrument of choice for greats such as Sviatoslav Richter and Glen Gould.
Over the years, with constant development and many prototypes, Yamaha’s concert grand had become the piano of choice for prominent artists, concert halls, and educational institutions worldwide. In 1983 came the CFIII, followed by the CFIII-S in 1991, by which time Yamaha had produced a staggering 5 million acoustic upright and grand pianos. In 1998 and performing on a Yamaha CFIII-S, Russian pianist Denis Matsuev took the top prize at the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow, firmly cementing Yamaha’s reputation as one of the world’s finest piano manufacturers. Two further model improvements came in 1996 and 2001, making this 2009 model, produced just before the CFIII-S was superseded by the CFX, an example of Yamaha’s most advanced CFIII-S design.
Elegant and perfectly suited to the concert stage
The CFIII-S is finished in a beautiful high gloss ebony lacquer with brass fittings, polished to perfection by our technicians and in wonderful condition throughout. A 3-position lid prop provides a range of options to suit the performance, whether for solo piano or accompanying, while both the lid and elegantly soft-closing fallboard can be locked for safety and security. Steamroller style brass castors make moving the piano across the stage a breeze, while locks on two of the castors keep the instrument securely in position.
The inimitable Yamaha grand piano sound
The Yamaha concert grand piano was carefully refined and developed over its 50-year history, with features of its design filtering down through Yamaha’s range and forming the basis of what we know as the ‘Yamaha-sound’ today. Described as ‘bel canto’ or ‘beautiful singing’, with a bright sparkly treble, distinctive bell-like clarity and a powerful tenor, the versatile tone of the CFIII-S is perfectly suited to all genres, from classical and romantic to jazz and contemporary music and everything in between. The sound of the CFIII-S can also be found in almost every Yamaha digital piano, stage piano and keyboard ever produced, making it one of the most used concert grand piano sounds in history.
