Like the musical itself, the Carousel Waltz marks a breakthrough in musical theatre, rejecting the conventional "medley" format in favour of a unique mood-setting theme.
Carousel opened on Broadway in 1945 followed by a run on the West End in 1950. Though it has never achieved as much commercial success as Oklahoma!, the piece has been repeatedly revived. In 1999, Time magazine named Carousel the best musical of the 20th century.
