"Idomeneo" (KV 366), first performed on January 29, 1781 in Munich's Cuvilliés-Theater, is Mozart's second opera for the Munich court after the opera buffa "La finta giardiniera" from 1775. The subject matter of the opera (“Idoménée” by Antoine Danchet) and its transformation into a libretto was laid down in written instructions, the unfortunately lost “plan”, as it was called in correspondence between father and son.
The appendix to the Bärenreiter piano reduction contains the cuts and changes made on the occasion of the premiere in Munich and the Viennese revision of 1786.
Suggestions for cadenzas or embellishment of fermatas in the vocal parts are reproduced as footnotes.
