The Amati ABN 31-OM is a short-reach student bassoon designed to make bassoon playing more accessible for younger musicians and players with smaller hands. Built from maple and fitted with silver-plated keywork, it retains the sound and playing characteristics of a full-size bassoon while reducing the physical demands associated with standard instruments.
Featuring a 19-key mechanism, the ABN 31-OM offers an expanded specification compared to entry-level short-reach models. The instrument incorporates a high C key, Eb vent key and piano lock key, providing developing players with additional functionality as they progress through more demanding repertoire.
Designed specifically for educational use, the short-reach layout helps younger players develop correct technique without excessive stretching. The ergonomic mechanism and balance holder contribute to a comfortable playing position, making the instrument particularly suitable for school music services, beginner tuition and youth ensembles.
The ABN 31-OM has been designed to reduce the finger stretches required on a standard bassoon while preserving traditional fingering patterns. This allows younger players to begin learning on an instrument that feels more manageable without compromising the development of correct technique.
The silver-plated mechanism includes 19 keys, offering additional functionality beyond basic student models. Features such as the high C key, Eb vent key and piano lock key support technical development and allow students to explore a wider range of repertoire as their playing progresses.
A covered wing-joint third finger hole, two rollers and balance holder are incorporated to improve comfort and playability. These features help reduce strain during longer practice sessions and encourage a more stable playing position.
