About djembes

Djembes (‘Jem-bays’) are a type of goblet shaped hand drum originally from West Africa, which are known for being able to produce a wide variety of tones by hitting the drum in different ways. They are ideal for playing in group settings and are becoming increasingly popular in schools and educational institutions, music therapy, drum circles, and festivals as a great way for pupils to practice rhythm, play as part of a percussion ensemble and create a fantastic sound.

Djembe groups are an ideal way to develop team working and group collaboration – the word djembe even translates to “everyone gather together in peace”. They are a fun and rewarding form of music teaching and provide a fantastic activity for schools to help improve student mental health and wellbeing. Try our nesting drums for a pack that is portable and convenient to store – making it easy to teach drumming anywhere.
