The
Yamaha YOB241B student oboe is a popular and high quality instrument. It is immediately one to compare with the
Buffet BC4121 model as their prices are similar but, the instruments themselves are rather different.
Whilst Buffet made the production decision to produce their student model in solid wood, Yamaha have manufactured the YOB241 oboe in ABS resin. It has to be said that Yamaha's production facilities are outstanding. The YOB241 model is incredibly precisely made and the ABS resin is of extremely high quality. The benefits of this way of production are numerous. The ABS material itself is very hard wearing, it does not crack and is not prone to some of the natural imperfections found on the lower grade wood used for student instruments.
The tone produced from the ABS material is excellent, this is mainly due to the way in which Yamaha has researched and developed this material. Yamaha would no-doubt claim that there really is not any sound difference between the student ABS resin they use and the low grade solid wood that other manufacturers use. Whether that is true would probably be down to the player, but it is certainly true that as a beginner any difference would be negligible.
As you would expect, the instrument is produced using the English Thumb plate system of key-work configuration. It also benefits from a number of trill keys - namely C#-D#, F#-G#, A#-B, B-C#, right C-D. It also has a low Bb key on the bell. Stainless steel springs enhance the speed of the action whilst being strong and non corrosive. The bell features a nickel silver ring which increases effective density which gives a quicker response and a much more focused sound.
Each oboe supplied by Chamberlain Music is subjected to a thorough set-up and play test. This ensures that your new instrument reaches you in perfect playing order.
The Yamaha YOB241B is supplied as an outfit which includes a solid hard case, reed, cleaning materials and cork grease.
