More about this title
William Lawes Fantasia-Suites: II - Set of Parts
for two violins, bass viol and organ. Set of String Parts
Edited by David Pinto. The organ part is available in Musica Britannica Volume 60 (MB60).
This set of parts is taken from Musica Britannica, volume 60, and is fully compatible with that score, using the same bar numbers and editorial procedures. The main volume contains all the 16 extant fantasia-suites of William Laws and a Textual Commentary which gives details of sources used for individual compositions and all variant readings. Some editorial problems are also discussed in detail, including ornamentation, temp and dynamics. The following is a summary of the more important editorial procedures adopted:
- Original note values are retained but for some final notes.
- Time signatures and (where necessary) rests have been modernised
- The beaming of quaver groups are standardised except where original phrasing may be implied
- Fantasia movements are barred in standard breve units, allowing for built-in ritardandi at cadence points
- Small accidentals, and ties with a vertical dash, are editorial.
For performance, the organ part must be played from the main volume.
