How our reviews work

  • A few days after your order ships we'll email you a link to leave a review. When your feedback is published it will carry a Customer verified badge, so others know it came from a real order with us.
  • We only ever edit a review to remove profanity, spam, or personal details - otherwise it's published exactly as written, good or bad. We won’t ever remove or edit critical ones.
  • You don't need to have bought a product from us to review it - if you know the product, we want you to let other shoppers know what you honestly think, using the form on the product page. These are moderated in the same way, but won't carry our Customer verified badge.

Introducing the Aulos 511B Symphony tenor recorder

Tenor recorders are pitched in the key of C (same fingering as the descant/soprano recorder) making them the ideal instrument for advancing students or for school ensembles.

The fingering can be a bit of a stretch with tenor recorders but this Aulos 511B features an easy-reach C/C# key and small to medium-spaced holes; both of which really help to improve the playability.

The quality of the Aulos 511B is much better than cheaper models. The intonation is extremely accurate and the arched windway allows for more controlled breathing and hence more expressive playing. The sound is deep and rich, especially in the lower registers, making it ideal for ensemble playing.

This instrument is supplied with a detachable thumb rest, a leatherette bag, cleaning rod, fingering chart and joint grease.

Order arrived very promptly via FedEx in just 2 days. Recorder sounds very nice although the low F and F# sound rather weak compared with the stronger tone of all other notes. Some finger positioning practice required to ensure successful annunciation of the lowest notes especially the low C. The tone does tend to even out with breath practice but not so readily easy as the Alto. Although the Aulos is cheaper than the equivalent Yamaha '304', I assume no real difference in performance. I prefer the design features of this Aulos especially for the 2 low side keys. Not sure of the wisdom of Yamaha's 'piggy-back' arrangement of their 2 keys as it flags potential issues (to me) of 'common mode failure' by sharing a single vent port and both pads having to efficiently seal the one common vent. Leakage of one more likely to impact its partner.

Arrived speedily and exactly as described. Lovely instrument.

It’s chunky and good quality and has a lovely tone. I’m just having to get my fingers used to the long stretch.
