Unlike traditional drum machines that rely on sample playback, the Volca Drum uses digital synthesis to create a wide range of percussive sounds. Each of the six parts features two layers with flexible parameters including waveform, modulation, and envelope shaping. This approach allows for deep sound design — from punchy electronic kicks to otherworldly metallic hits and glitches.
At the heart of the Volca Drum’s sound engine is the waveguide resonator, simulating the resonance of physical bodies like tubes and strings. This adds a dynamic, physical quality to your rhythms, bringing your drum patterns to life with subtle movement and unique textures.
The 16-step sequencer makes it easy to build complex rhythms on the fly. With real-time recording and step input, you can program beats quickly and creatively. Motion sequencing allows you to record parameter changes over time, giving your grooves extra depth and variation.
The Volca Drum includes essential features for live use, including an active step function, pattern chain mode, and choke groups for tight groove control. You can chain patterns together for longer performances, mute parts on the fly, or use the slice function for stutter-like effects.
Like other instruments in the Volca series, the Volca Drum features sync in/out ports for tight integration with other Korg Volca units, pocket operators, or modular gear. A MIDI input also allows for sequencing from external gear or your DAW.
