We do not know whether the young Mozart's Divertimenti KV 136-138 were composed as orchestral works for a choral ensemble or whether these were works for soloists that were at the beginning of the then new string quartet genre. There is evidence for both in the tradition of the works. On the one hand, the present edition of parts with the Urtext of the New Mozart Edition completes the series of Mozart's string quartets in individual editions, and on the other hand, the individually available duplicating parts and the study score (TP 278) make it possible to perform the divertimenti as orchestral works with the material from the New Mozart Edition .
