Useful for anyone who needs to practice on the go, in the house or even for warming up prior to a gig, this brilliant accessory is a perfect tool for any serious brass player.

Even with its superb functionality, it's so light that you hardly feel its weight, reducing strain and letting you play in a more natural way. The pickup mute also features a specially designed mini microphone, optimised to maximize the potential of Yamaha’s brass resonance modelling.

How does Silent Brass work?

The Silent Brass package consists of a small, light, free blowing pickup mute, and the personal studio pack, which features Yamaha’s exclusive brass resonance modelling system. Used together with a simple wired connection, the two deliver the natural acoustic tone you hear when playing without a mute, making it feel as though you are playing freely. However, take your headphones off and you will hear a totally muffled, very quiet sound coming from the bell of the instrument, and those in the next room will barely hear anything at all!

Sleek and sophisticated design

The mute is designed to attach and remove smoothly, fitting neatly inside the bell of the trombone. It is also very lightweight, helping you to forget that it's even there and just play as you would normally. It features a specially designed mini microphone, whose mounting position and surrounding design have been optimized to bring out the full potential of brass resonance modelling.

Brass resonance modelling system

Brass resonance modelling is original Yamaha technology that effectively cancels the characteristic closed sound of a mute, reproducing the open, natural sound of the unmuted instrument. This reduces stress on players by allowing them to practice and play freely without feeling restricted by the mute. Brass resonance modelling utilizes three simultaneous processes to produce the realistic tone of the brass instrument:


1. Cancel the distinctive mute sound

Sound picked up by the microphone at the end of the pickup mute is processed digitally to cancel out the characteristic “closed” sound of the mute.

2. Add the instrument’s natural sound

The natural sound that emanates from the bell and returns to the player’s ears when the instrument is played without a mute is reproduced and added.

3. Adjust left-right balance to match the player’s position

The timing, volume, and tone of the sound reaching the player’s left and right ears are individually adjusted, and reverb is added as needed to accurately simulate the feel of playing in a room or hall.

Audience mode for monitoring

Whilst for practice situations, you can just use the standard 'Player' mode which allows only you to hear yourself as you would without a mute in, the also SB5J features an 'Audience' mode. This is essentially a self-monitoring function, which recreates the sound of your instrument from the perspective of a listener, making it an excellent choice for recording sessions or online lessons.

Connect to your devices with the Personal Studio

The Personal Studio STJ is equipped with a micro USB port that allows for a seamless connection to computers and smart devices. The convenience of using the provided USB cable to connect the Personal Studio to your desired device greatly simplifies the process, removing the need for additional audio interfaces or complex wiring configurations. An adapter may be required for smartphone connections.

The Rec’n’Share app

The Personal Studio STJ can also be seamlessly connected to Yamaha's free Rec’n’Share app on smart devices, allowing you to play along with audio tracks stored on your device. Not only that, but it also enables you to record your performance and share it online. The app also includes beneficial features like adjustable playback tempo, an AB repeat function for focused practice on specific sections, and a click track analysis for rhythm assistance. These features make practice more efficient, productive and enjoyable, with even more possibilities!
