Designed to stand the test of time in classroom environments, Slap Djembes' strong yet lightweight design amplifies their accessibility without compromising on sound; the booming bass acts as a foundation, with crisp slaps and deep resonant tones providing the exciting variety that makes these djembes ideal for group music lessons.

Supplied either pre-tuned, rope tuned or mechanically tuned and in a range of sizes from 6" to 12" head diameters, the World Slap Djembe range encourages you to form your own djembe circle and get playing. They are fantastic tools for SEND learning, Whole Class Ensemble Teaching (WCET) and can even be used as part of CPD programmes for teachers looking to develop their musical options and skills!

A brief history of the djembe

The djembe is a traditional West African drum with origins dating back to the 12th century among the Mandé people of modern-day Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso. Its name comes from the Mandinka phrase meaning "gather in peace." Originally used in sacred ceremonies, storytelling, and community rituals, the djembe played a crucial role in African culture. Over time, it spread across West Africa, with each region developing unique rhythms and techniques. In the mid-20th century, African musicians introduced the djembe to global audiences, making it a popular instrument in world music, classrooms, and performances worldwide.

Andy Gleadhill's Slap Djembe book

Written in partnership with Percussion Plus, Andy Gleadhill's Slap Djembe is the perfect introduction to playing and teaching the djembe. It utilises unique, easy-to-follow notation that works with any drum, but pairs especially well with Percussion Plus' Slap Djembes. Now expanded to 60 pages with full colour throughout, this edition promises a comprehensive class percussion experience for KS2 & KS3, as well as US elementary & middle schools.

Complete accompanying resources including video, audio, whiteboard assets and a full digital copy of the book are available for free online to help make your lessons flow!

Decorative designs

There are currently five different Slap Djembe decorative designs:

• World - embodies the inclusive spirit of djembe drumming and of Percussion Plus' ethos. Inspired by Andy Gleadhill's Slap Djembe, the map-style sarong-wrapped shell immerses students in a multicultural learning experience.
• Carnival - this design infuses the djembes with a lively, vibrant aesthetic, embodying the spirit of celebration. Bold and eye-catching, the unique cloth wrap inspires music making in all ages. From primary and secondary to festival drum circles, music therapy and more.
• Bali - a stunning sarong wrap design, adding a beautiful and traditional touch. Sarongs are large pieces of fabric commonly worn in Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Pacific, known for their intricate prints and cultural significance. In this case, the sarong wrap lends a unique aesthetic appeal while also offering good protection for the drum shell.
• Ubud - like the Bali djembes, the Ubud series features a sarong wrap design, this time utilising a striking monochrome pattern.
• Original - the classic, festive design is still popular to this day!
