The Stentor Conservatoire cello outfit is chosen by intermediate players and above, and is often recommended by teachers as a step-up instrument for students. Handmade from attractive tonewoods with an attractive grain, the instrument has a polished finish and produces a wonderfully warm, mellow sound that offers an exceptional balance between the mid, high and low tones. Created from solid and selected flamed tonewoods and Shellax varnish, the outfit is supplied with a good quality hardcase and a hardwood bow with natural horsehair.
Stentor is the leading manufacturer of student stringed orchestral instruments worldwide, and distributes to over 30 countries. They are also the UK's leading independent distributor of musical instruments. Hand carved by skilled craftsmen and women in China, they still utilise the traditional skills used by the original founder well over one hundred years ago to create all of their instruments. Registered as a brand since 1895, these years of experience yield high-quality student instruments which are perfect for taking players through all the grades.
This cello is hand carved from selected tonewoods, with a carved spruce front and flamed maple back and sides. All of these woods have been specially selected for their superb resonance and quality of tone. Furthermore, unlike more basic student instruments which come with a laminated finish, the Conservatoire cello is varnished with shellax – a super-shiny, hard wearing gloss which improves the tonal qualities of the instrument as well as highlighting the beautiful grain of the flamed maple.
Ebony fittings and inlaid purfling also make the cello stand out. Ebony is renowned for being a durable, hard-wearing material which makes it perfect for students. And purfling, a thin groove filled with reinforced wood around the edges of the instrument, provides protection from bumps or knocks, as it stops any small cracks from spreading to the main body of the instrument.
The cello is set up with the standard factory strings. For a warmer and fuller sound, it is always possible to upgrade the instrument by adding Dominant or Jargar strings, which can improve the tone significantly.
This cello comes as an outfit with a lightweight hard case and good quality brazilwood bow with ebony frog and natural white horsehair. As opposed to the Student I and II, a hard case provides greater protection for the instrument, making it easier to transport to and from music lessons or performances. This is aided by the addition of shoulder straps, so the case can be carried on the back.
Available in a range of sizes from 1/4 to 4/4 (full-size), the Stentor Conservatoire is able to cater for youngsters right through to adults.
