This is a traditionally crafted Chinese suspended 12" chau gong on traditional wooden stand and supplied with cloth headed wooden mallet.
The gong itself is bronze and has been hand crafted in china using traditional methods.
The stand is crafted from Chinese pine and is finished in a red mahogany lacquer.
Traditionally the chau gong was played as an announcement to clear the way for important officials. It has been said that the number of strokes played on the gong would also signify the seniority or importance of the official.
This meant that if there were two officials approaching in opposite directions, then the embarrassment of who should bow first could be avoided.
