The Makala Waterman series of soprano ukuleles are something of a departure from the norm. They are constructed entirely from a very high grade plastic carbonate. This has a number of advantages - firstly, and perhaps most importantly, is the overall longevity of the instrument. Plastic does not warp or change shape due to temperature change. It is this which makes the Waterman the ideal school purchase but also the ideal traveling or festival instrument - the uke is completely waterproof and very easy to keep clean. The plastic molded body has no joins so there are no weak points in the overall construction. Secondly, plastic molded construction enables the sort of consistency of manufacture that is impossible to achieve with wood products and at this level an entirely consistent instrument is important, especially if a school is purchasing multiple units.

But what of the sound? Wooden instruments are known to sound better aren't they? After all, you don't see a plastic violin or piano? Whilst this is true, it has to be remembered that standard soprano ukuleles are produced from very cost effective wood. Also, the soprano ukulele does not have a huge sound chamber. Additionally the overall sound quality is effected enormously of course by the quality of the strings, and in this case the high end Aquila strings do their job very well! The sound is resonant and has a nice overall depth and is comparable to that of its wooden cousins.
