Robert Schumann was one of the first to pay tribute to the hitherto little known composer Franz Schubert in his “Neue Zeitschrift für Musik”. In a review on the occasion of a quartet evening in 1838, he wrote about the quartet “Death and the Maiden”, which is presented here in the parts edition with the original text of the New Schubert Edition: “Only the excellence of a work like the one in D minor by Schubert ... can comfort in something about the early and most painful death of this firstborn Beethoven; he achieved and completed it in a short time than anyone before him ”.
