Claves consist of a pair of short dowels or sticks typically made of ebony or rosewood however plastic and fiberglass versions are available. The player holds the first dowel loosely in one hand while striking it with the second dowel to produce high pitched rhythmical accented passages. Claves can be heard frequently in Cuban, Samba and African music as well as in many contemporary rock and pop songs.
