The Alto saxophone is, along with the Tenor sax, one of the most common woodwind instruments. Most often used in Jazz and Pop music it has also carved an interesting niche for itself within the 20th Century classical repertoire. Known for its raspy, flexible and rich tone it is a popular beginner instrument which is pitched in Eb.
The Alto sax tends to be the member of the saxophone family most recommended for beginners. Principally this is due to weight, it is one of the lighter members of the sax family which makes it much easier for young players to manage and although the soprano sax is lighter it simply doesn’t have the quality of repertoire available and is mostly thought of as a doubling instrument.
Alto Saxophone prices can vary enormously and what we at Chamberlain Music have tried to do is put together a comprehensive range of instruments to give our customers the best possible choice. The best value instruments are generally produced in the Far East and although these instruments are not as refined as some of the more expensive models in our line-up, they do offer a reasonably cost effective way of owning your first sax. It is worth pointing out though, that these starter instruments are only really good enough for the very early grades and assuming good progress is made it will not be long before an upgrade is necessary. The John Packer JP041 is our value instrument of choice. Purchasing a more expensive student instrument, the Jupiter JAS500 or the Yamaha YAS280 may however be a better investment. They are extremely well produced and play very nicely indeed. Purchasing an instrument like this may well negate the need to purchase an intermediate instrument at all as they will take the player well in to the middle grades after which something more professional is more appropriate.
Alto saxophones are available to hire on our Instrument Rental Scheme. They can also be purchased on Interest Free Finance via the Arts Council funded Take it Away scheme. The Assisted Instrument Purchase scheme is also worth investigating as this enables students to purchase instruments through their school without paying the VAT (currently set at 20%). All of these options can make Alto Saxophone ownership much more affordable. Do call 01428 658806 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information
