Treble (alto) recorders
Treble (alto) recorders are pitched a fifth lower than descant recorders and are approximately 50% bigger in all dimensions. They are tuned in the key of F and play music notated in the treble clef. Whilst the fingering for a treble recorder is the same as a descant, everything will sound five notes lower eg. if you play a ‘descant low C’ on a treble, it will sound as an F.
Treble recorders normally provide the harmony part in recorder ensembles, though they also feature as solo instruments in a lot of Baroque music. In the school environment, they will often be played by teachers or older students because the keyholes are spaced further apart than on a descant and therefore can be a bit of a stretch for smaller hands.
Here at Chamberlain Music we keep a good stock of treble recorders including our own brand ‘Recorder Workshop 602A’ as well as the Yamaha YRA range and an array of popular Aulos models.
