About Samba percussion

Samba is a musical genre/ dance style which is globally recognized as a symbol of Brazil and the Brazilian Carnival. The percussion sections in Samba music are known as the baterias, meaning “drum kit” in Portuguese and Spanish. In Escolas de Samba (Samba schools) in Brazil, these sections can vary in size from 5 to 500 musicians.

The bateria section often consists of tamborims, snare drums, agogo bells, surdos, shakers, cuica, timbal, pandeiro and the repinique. The repinique is often carried by the leader, who also uses whistles to alert different sections of the music. The fantastic, lively sound created by the bateria is truly perfect for music departments that want to expand their world music teaching.
