The tambourine can be with or without a head or skin but is essentially a tambour only if it has pairs of metal jingles called zils arranged in intervals and set into recess in the frame. Tambours and tambourines are used throughout the world in many musical styles such as traditional folk music from around the globe and contemporary rock music. These drums are typically made from wood and are circular in shape however many other shapes are available in wood, plastic or occasionally metal.
