The origins of the castanets is unknown however the idea of clicking two sticks together in one hand can be traced back to ancient Greek and Egyptian times. Used throughout the world in various style however most notably in Spanish flamenco music. Typically made of wood the castanets consist of two concave shells joined together at one end by the use of string of chord. They are played in one hand by clicking the two halves together for rhythmic accent or a rattling sound.
