What is a dynamic microphone?

Dynamic microphones, dynamics, or stage microphones are also known as moving coil microphones. This is because inside a dynamic mic is a small metal coil attached to the rear of a membrane. When you sing or play into the microphone, the soundwaves move the membrane in in turn the coil which induces a small signal voltage in the coil. This produces an electrical signal that can be amplified or recorded on stage or in the studio.

These are typically used on stage due to their rugged nature, and they also don’t need any external power. Condenser microphones are usually used in a studio as they are more delicate, but capture much more sonic detail.
