Bodhrans, frame drums & beaters
The frame drum or traditional Irish Bodhran are drums much like a headed tambourine however much larger, usually ranging from between 25 to 65cm and without jingles. The frame drum traditionally has either one or two crossbars (sometimes removable) fixed to the back rim of the frame, which is also open ended so the player can place their open hand against the back of the skin to control pitch and timbre. This skin or membrane is traditionally made from calf skin, with a specially designed beater that the player uses both ends of to play the instrument.
