This hand painted, brightly coloured guiro is a perfect early years' percussion instrument. The guiro is a key instrument for the typical rhythm section in Puerto Rican and Latin-American music. It is normally played by holding the guiro with the left hand, with the finger and thumb inserted into the two sound holes to keep the instrument in place. The scraper is held in the right hand and is used to play the instrument. The typical guiro sound is created by rubbing the scraper along the ridges of the guiro in a range of long and short strokes.
