The Yamaha YCL255S is a wonderfully high quality student clarinet. It is the most expensive of the well known student models, namely the Buffet 12 and the Jupiter JCL700-S-Q but it is very well made, has a strong re-sale value and will take the student through a good many of the grades without the need to immediately upgrade.
The body of the instrument is produced using composite ABS plastic which is both incredibly durable as well as being able to produce a sound not unlike a solid wood model. In fact the composite material has been designed specifically to produce a resonant, full bodied tone and it is this which enables the instrument to perform well into the middle grades. It is also robust , lightweight and very easy to maintain which makes it the ideal student instrument.
This is the most recent YCL200 series model, the last being the now obsolete YCL250, and with this latest model, Yamaha have made some minor adjustments to the adjustable thumb rest, making it more comfortable to play with. They’ve also completely removed the traditional metal ring from the bell. Taking this weight off the end of the clarinet makes it slightly more manageable for younger or less experienced players.
The nickel-silver key-work is well designed and offers a smooth well regulated playing experience. It is also incredibly strong which should mean less trips to the woodwind technician!
The instrument is supplied as an outfit which includes a nicely made CLC-200EII case, a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece, ligature and cleaning materials.
This model is justifiably a favorite among teachers and music professionals and comes highly recommended.
