Introducing the Howarth S20 intermediate oboe outfit

Howarth's S20 oboe outfit is significant step up from the S10 and is designed specifically for the advancing student and is suitable for performance up to grade 8 standard and beyond.

Advanced keywork

Its body design is similar to that of the S10, made from solid African Hardwood with silver plated keywork. The key configuration is that of the English Thumb Plate system and all in all the instrument produces a good, resonant, well balanced tone. For the Conservatoire System model, see the S20C.

The key differences between this model and the student S10 model are to do with the keywork configuration. This model has semi-automatic octaves and C-D, C-C# left hand trill keys as well as C-D right hand trill keys. These features are essential when playing at a higher level.

Includes accessories and setup

The S20 is one of a beautiful range of student and intermediate oboes produced by Howarth. These are very well made and are subjected to a detailed set up, here at Chamberlain Music, prior to dispatch.

Howarth of London

Howarth are the very definition of a specialist manufacturer. They have been continually in existence since 1948 although the name Howarth has been associated with woodwind manufacture since the 1870s. They are, today, considered to be one of the finest bespoke manufacturers of oboes, oboes d'amore and English horns and their instruments are all extremely high quality. Their student models are justifiably well regarded and are popular throughout the education sector.

What are the different types of oboe?

Thumplate oboes are widely used in the UK as starting instruments. They feature simplified keywork and a narrower bore to make them more accessible for younger players. Dual system oboes have more advanced keywork and generally a bigger bore, and are intended for players of a higher standard doing solo or orchestral work. Conservatoire system oboes are mainly found in Continental Europe and the US, and have a different fingering technique altogether which is also intended for more advanced players.
