Introducing the Howarth Junior oboe outfit

The Howarth junior oboe is based on the tried and tested design of the extremely popular standard range of student oboes. Designed specifically for young beginners, this instrument is a fully covered-hole model that uses standard oboe reeds and features a special lightweight key mechanism.

It also has a fully chromatic 2½ octave range from bottom C, giving players plenty of tonal variety. With a body made of African Grenadilla blackwood, which is traditionally used for more professional models, this instrument is durable and provides a great quality sound.

Built to help young students progress

There are extensions on 4 finger plates that give greater comfort, especially for smaller hands. The keywork has been further simplified to keep the instrument light and reduce any risk of accidental keywork damage. Plus, the use of standard fingering makes it much easier for students to eventually progress to more advanced models.

What are the different types of oboe?

Thumplate oboes are widely used in the UK as starting instruments. They feature simplified keywork and a narrower bore to make them more accessible for younger players. Dual system oboes have more advanced keywork and generally a bigger bore, and are intended for players of a higher standard doing solo or orchestral work. Conservatoire system oboes are mainly found in Continental Europe and the US, and have a different fingering technique altogether which is also intended for more advanced players.
