What we think of the Yamaha CLP645 digital piano

The NEW Yamaha 600 series range of CLP clavinovas are another major step forward for digital piano technology, launched at the Frankfurt Music Messe in April 2017 they are already set to be even more popular than the outgoing 500 series. The CLP645 is the popular mid range model and as such has a number of differences when compared to the CLP635. Perhaps the first thing to mention is that the CLP645 has a much improved amplification system with (25w+25w) x 2 amplifiers which are attached to a high quality two speaker system. This is installed in tandem with a much more detailed piano sample - the CLP645 benefits from smooth release, key off and string resonance which creates a sample which sounds more 'acoustic' than ever. This is also the first model in the new lineup to feature the Natural Wood X keyboard along with the synthetic ebony and ivory key tops. This provides a more natural feel which works perfectly with the upgraded speaker system and sampling technology. This model also features built in Bluetooth which enables wireless connection to your tablet which enhances the versatility of this instrument enormously.

The sound of some of the finest concert grand pianos in the world

Featuring the sound of two of the world's finest concert grand pianos, the new Yamaha Clavinova CLP645 allows you to select the perfect sound for your performance at the touch of a button. With Binaural sampling on the CFX and Virtual Resonance Modelling the instrument offers much more than just a sampled sound, reproducing the sound of the Yamaha CFX concert grand and the legendary B?sendorfer Imperial in meticulous detail.

The powerful tone of the acclaimed CFX

The 9' long CFX is Yamaha's flagship concert grand piano model, renowned for its sparkling treble and powerful, resonant bass, capable of filling any concert hall. The CFX was played by the winner of the prestigious International Chopin Competition in 2010, and has since gained recognition as one of the greatest concert grands of modern times.

The legendary sound of a Bösendorfer Imperial

Becoming part of the Yamaha Group in 2008, Bosendorfer was founded in Vienna in 1828 and to this day utilises the traditional Viennese methods of hand-crafted piano design and manufacture. Famous for its unique, warm bass sound, singing treble and rich tone known as the 'Viennese Sound', Bosendorfer found favour with many famous and influential composers such as Brahms and Strauss, whose works influenced the development of the instrument. A Bosendorfer piano is lauded as the only instrument capable of withstanding the frenetic playing of Liszt!

VRM physical modeling—the distinctive reverberation generated by the entire body of a concert grand piano

In a grand piano, sound resonates throughout the body of the instrument, producing a rich reverberation that envelops the listener in sound. This phenomena is reproduced perfectly in the Clavinova through enhanced Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM). The original VRM calculates the various states of the strings for each of the 88 notes on the keyboard, from one instant to the next, and timing and depth of damper pedals pressed. The enhanced VRM now also calculates aliquot resonance in the upper octaves, and the full resonance of the soundboard, rim, and frame. This technology allows for vivid, bright, richly-varied expression that reflects the limitless number of factors inherent in piano performance.

From staccato to legato—superbly expressive sound that responds to the player’s touch

Featuring Yamaha Smooth Release technology, Clavinova offers the crisp tone heard when playing staccato as well as the lingering sound produced by releasing the keys more. This provides finely-nuanced response to the pianist’s playing.

Smooth tonal transformations perfectly matched to key pressure

Sound in an acoustic piano attenuates over a long time. Pianists can change the volume of the sound—as well as its dynamics—to achieve both mellow and bright tones by simply changing the pressure they apply to the keys.

The Clavinova features long, carefully-sampled recordings of notes on a piano, reproduces them in rich detail and utilizes unique Yamaha technologies to achieve smooth tonal transitions in response to the touch of the player.

Additionally, the Clavinova has been repeatedly tested and adjusted by numerous pianists in order to attain a performance feel similar to that of a grand piano.

Key-Off samples

The moment a pianist’s fingers are lifted from the keys of a grand piano, subtle changes occur in the instrument’s tone as the damper is lowered onto the strings to mute its sound. Key-Off samples features actual recordings of these changes, offering a faithful reproduction of the most subtle changes in the piano’s sound, allowing for a more realistic performance.

Natural Wood X keyboard—the feel of an acoustic grand

Natural Wood X (NWX) keyboards are created using unrivaled expertise that Yamaha has acquired
