The student series of MMX instruments offer unrivalled value for money. Each instrument is expertly hand crafted by the luthiers in the Gua Fang Wang workshop in Beijing with superb attention to detail. The violins are made from select spruce and ebony to ensure the best possible tone, and the solid maple back and sides are beautifully flamed for a professional-looking finish.
The last stage in the manufacture of these instruments is hand applying an oil based varnish. Unlike other violins at this price point which are usually finished with a plastic type lacquer, the oil varnish gives a very desirable antique finish to the instrument and, instead of encasing the wood, works with it to further enhance the tone.
All of our instruments come completely set up and ready to play. The final stage of preparation happens here in our workshop where our luthier sets the soundpost to the correct position, carves the bridge so that it fits the top of the violin perfectly, and sets the strings at the correct height to allow the best possible playing experience. The pegs are also worked in to allow maximum tuning stability and ease of tuning. On top of all of this we also fit the violins with a set of D'addario prelude strings, as we think that an instrument of this quality deserves better than the factory strings which competing violins in this price range usually come with! These strings produce a richer tone, and the sound of the instrument is greatly improved.
As opposed to other instruments in its price bracket, the BEC-100 comes with a beautifully hand-crafted bridge which has been delicately shaped to help produce a mellow tone. Due to the thinner shape, the sound is able to resonate better through the body of the instrument, and so produce a richer, more rounded tone. The instrument is of course complete with high-quality ebony fittings and, as opposed to other student instruments, contains intricate purfling to the front and back. These narrow grooves in the instrument can also improve the instrument’s pitch and sustain.
As well as being supplied fully set up, the violin comes complete as an outfit, including a Tom & Will oblong case, professional quality MMX carbon fibre bow and Stagg rosin. The case includes an additional pocket for a shoulder rest, as well as two bow holders and a hygrometer.
There are many benefits to having a carbon fibre bow as opposed to wood. Carbon fibre is an incredibly light material, and therefore can be easier to handle for long periods of time. Furthermore, it is more durable than wood, and therefore less susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity which can cause some bows to warp over time.
This instrument is available in a variety of sizes - for children it is worth asking the teacher to recommend the appropriate size, or if you are local, pop in to our Haslemere showroom where our staff will be delighted to advise.
