The Buffet BC4121 student oboe outfit is ideal for the progressing player. This particular model is one of the better value solid wooden instruments and as such is the ideal upgrade from a John Packer model.
The first thing to say about this model is that it is uses the 'English Thumb Plate system'. The oboe is an unusual and interesting instrument and many oboes can vary greatly from model to model. This is unlike the clarinet, for example, which has become standardised throughout the world. The English Thumb Plate system is a type of key-work configuration which is unique to the UK. Literally, the rest of the work uses a different key-work layout, called the Conservatoire system. This instrument incorporates a 2nd octave key, a forked F key and a double G# and Eb key.
The second important thing to say is that the body of this instrument is produced using a solid African hardwood called Grenadilla. Solid wood is well known to produce a better overall tone quality, although wooden oboes can be prone to cracking. Buffet have thought of this though and have coated the bore of the instrument in Luracast which is essentially a type of lacquer that prevents cracking. It also encourages good sound projection.
The Buffet BC4121 has silver plated keys and stainless steel rods and pivot screws. This makes the action quick, efficient and importantly, non-corrosive.
This oboe is supplied complete with a high quality hard case and cleaning materials and is fully set up prior to dispatch.
